About the Bulgarian E-Vignette
The Bulgarian electronic vignette (електронна винетка) is administered by the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) through the bgtoll.bg portal. It is mandatory for all passenger vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes using Bulgarian motorways and first-class roads.
What makes Bulgaria unique: unlike most European countries, the vignette is required not only on motorways but also on all first-class roads (I-class) — regular national roads with single-digit route numbers (e.g., road 1, road 7, road 8). This catches many foreign drivers by surprise.
Bulgaria offers four validity periods: 7 days, 30 days, 3 months, and annual — making it one of the most flexible systems in Europe. Government fees are set in Bulgarian Lev (BGN), pegged to the Euro at 1 EUR ≈ 1.95583 BGN.
Vehicles Exempt from the Bulgarian Vignette
- Emergency vehicles (police, ambulance, fire brigade)
- Military vehicles on official duty
- Diplomatic vehicles with CD plates
- Vehicles over 3.5t — these use separate toll systems
Key Bulgarian Motorway Corridors
All A-roads (motorways) AND first-class (I-class) roads require a valid e-vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

Which Vehicles Need the Bulgarian Vignette?
Bulgaria requires the e-vignette on a broader road network than most European countries. Here is a complete overview of what requires registration.
Passenger Cars & Vans
Up to 3.5 tonnes GVW
All private cars, minivans, and SUVs up to 3,500 kg require an e-vignette on Bulgarian motorways AND first-class roads. This is required from the moment you enter a motorway or I-class road.
Motorcycles
All engine sizes
Motorcycles require their own e-vignette for use on Bulgarian motorways and first-class roads. A car vignette does not cover a motorcycle — separate registration required per vehicle.
Electric Vehicles (BEV)
Vignette required — no exemption
Bulgaria does not exempt electric vehicles from the e-vignette requirement. All fully electric cars and BEV up to 3.5 tonnes must purchase a valid vignette before using Bulgarian motorways and first-class roads.
Heavy Goods Vehicles
Over 3.5 tonnes GVW
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes do not use the e-vignette system. Instead, they pay distance-based tolls through the TollPass electronic system managed by the Road Infrastructure Agency.
HGV toll requires a TollPass on-board unit. Register at bgtoll.bg before entry.
Official bgtoll.bg portalFines & Penalties
Driving without a valid e-vignette on Bulgarian motorways or first-class roads can result in a fine of BGN 300 (~€153). RIA cameras monitor entry points, and road police conduct spot checks particularly near Turkish and Greek borders.
First-Class Roads (I-Class)
A-roads + I-class roads — both require vignette
Unlike most EU countries, Bulgaria requires the vignette on all first-class roads (I-class, single-digit route numbers) — not just motorways. These are major intercity routes. Check your route before driving to avoid surprises.
Which Roads Require the Vignette?
Bulgaria has the broadest vignette requirement in Central/Eastern Europe. The e-vignette covers both motorways AND first-class roads — a much wider network than just highways. Always check your route before driving.
Secondary roads (class II and below), city streets, and local roads are free. But most major intercity routes in Bulgaria are first-class roads and require the vignette.
Requires Vignette
- All motorways — A1, A2, A3, A4, A6
- All first-class roads (I-class, single-digit routes)
- Border approach roads on A-class network
No Vignette Needed
- Second-class and third-class roads
- City streets and urban roads
- Local and rural roads
Trakia Motorway (A1) — most important route
The A1 Trakia motorway connects Sofia to the Black Sea coast via Plovdiv and Burgas — the busiest road in Bulgaria. Camera checks are active along the entire length.
Key Border Crossings
Bulgaria borders Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey. Most major crossings connect directly to motorways or first-class roads — the vignette is required immediately upon joining these roads.

Turkey Kapitan Andreevo

Register your Bulgarian e-vignette before crossing into Bulgaria. Long queues form at Turkish and Greek border crossings — having your vignette ready saves time.

Bulgarian E-Vignette — Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Bulgarian electronic vignette (електронна винетка).
The shortest option is the 7-day vignette at €16 total. It is ideal for a short trip or weekend break. Other options are 30 days (€24), 3 months (€36), and annual (€61).
No. Unlike Slovakia, Bulgaria does not exempt electric vehicles from the e-vignette requirement. All passenger vehicles — regardless of fuel type including fully electric BEV — must purchase a valid vignette before using Bulgarian first-class roads and motorways.
The Bulgarian vignette is required on all motorways (A-roads) AND on all first-class roads (I-class roads, marked with single-digit route numbers). This is broader than most European countries — even non-motorway first-class routes require the vignette.
Driving on Bulgarian motorways or first-class roads without a valid e-vignette results in a fine of BGN 300 (approximately €153). The Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) operates camera systems at motorway entries and conducts roadside checks, particularly near Turkish and Greek borders.
Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Government fees are set in BGN by law; we display the EUR equivalent for convenience. The BGN is pegged to EUR at 1 EUR ≈ 1.95583 BGN.
