About the Swiss Autobahnvignette

The Swiss motorway vignette (Autobahnvignette in German, Vignette autoroutière in French, Vignetta autostradale in Italian) is mandatory for all passenger vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes using national roads in Switzerland. Since 2024, it is available exclusively as an electronic vignette — no physical sticker is issued or required.

The annual vignette costs CHF 40 (approximately €43.40) and is valid from the moment of registration until 31 January 2027 at 23:59:59. You may drive on Swiss motorways immediately after a successful registration — cameras along Swiss roads verify your plate automatically.

All Swiss motorways and national roads marked with green signs require the vignette. City roads, cantonal roads, and non-motorway routes do not require it.

Vehicles Exempt from the Vignette

  • Emergency and rescue vehicles (police, ambulance, fire)
  • Military vehicles on official duty
  • Agricultural and forestry machinery
  • Diplomatic vehicles with CD plates

Key Swiss Motorway Corridors

A1 Geneva → St. Margrethen Main east-west corridor
A2 Basel → Chiasso North-south, through Alps
A3 Basel → Chur Rhine valley corridor
A9 Lausanne → Brig Valais / Wallis route

All roads listed above require a valid vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

Which Vehicles Need the Vignette?

The Swiss vignette requirement depends on vehicle type and weight. Here is a complete overview.

Passenger Cars & Vans

Up to 3.5 tonnes GVW

All private cars, minivans, SUVs, and campervans with a gross vehicle weight up to 3,500 kg require the annual Swiss vignette when using national roads.

Motorcycles

All engine sizes

Motorcycles and mopeds require their own separate vignette — a vehicle vignette for a car does NOT cover a motorcycle or vice versa. Separate registration required.

Trailers & Caravans

Towed vehicles up to 3.5t

Trailers and caravans require their own separate vignette if their gross vehicle weight exceeds a certain threshold. They are registered independently from the towing vehicle.

Heavy Goods Vehicles

Over 3.5 tonnes GVW

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes do not use the vignette system. Instead, they are subject to the LSVA (Leistungsabhängige Schwerverkehrsabgabe) — a distance-based heavy vehicle fee charged per kilometre.

LSVA is managed by Swiss Federal Customs Administration (BAZG). On-board units (OBU) are required.

Electric Vehicles (BEV)

Fully electric up to 3.5t

Unlike Czech Republic, Switzerland does not exempt electric vehicles from the vignette requirement. All electric passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes must have a valid annual vignette.

Fines & Penalties

Driving on Swiss national roads without a valid vignette can result in an on-the-spot fine of CHF 200, plus you will be required to purchase the vignette. Cameras monitor motorway access points and toll-free entry roads.

Which Roads Require the Vignette?

The Swiss motorway vignette is required on national roads (Nationalstrassen) marked with green signs and the letter A. These are the main motorways and expressways across Switzerland.

City roads, cantonal roads (marked with yellow signs), and local access roads do not require a vignette — you may use these freely without one.

Requires Vignette

  • All national motorways (A-roads, green signs)
  • Most expressways and semi-motorways
  • Mountain tunnel approaches on national roads
  • Bypass roads on national network

No Vignette Needed

  • City streets and urban roads
  • Cantonal roads (yellow signs)
  • Mountain passes not on national network
  • Private and residential roads

Major Alpine Tunnels — included

The Gotthard Road Tunnel (A2), San Bernardino Tunnel (A13), and all other tunnels on national motorways are fully covered by the standard vignette. No separate tunnel toll is charged in Switzerland — one vignette, all motorways, all tunnels.

Key Border Crossings

Switzerland shares borders with Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. Most major crossing points connect directly to national motorways, meaning the vignette is required immediately after entry.

Swiss Vignette — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Autobahnvignette.

No. Switzerland offers only an annual vignette (CHF 40). There are no short-term options for motorway use. If you enter Switzerland even for a single day on the motorway, you need the full annual vignette.

The current Swiss vignette is valid from the moment of purchase until 31 January 2027 at 23:59:59. This means every vignette registered now covers until 31.01.2027 regardless of when you register.

Yes. Motorcycles require a valid Swiss e-vignette to use national roads, the same as passenger cars. Trailers also require their own separate vignette — the vignette of the towing vehicle does not cover the trailer. Only vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are exempt (they pay the LSVA heavy vehicle fee instead).

Driving without a valid vignette on Swiss motorways results in an on-the-spot fine of CHF 200, plus you will be required to obtain a vignette immediately.

Your vehicle registration plate number is linked to the vignette in the official Swiss Customs database. Police can verify validity instantly by scanning your plate — no paper or sticker is required.

All national roads (Nationalstrassen / routes nationales) designated with the green motorway sign require a vignette. This includes all motorways (A-roads). City ring roads and cantonal roads generally do not require a vignette.
