About the Slovenian DARS Vignette
The Slovenian motorway vignette (elektronska vinjeta) is administered by DARS (Družba za avtoceste v Republiki Sloveniji) — the company responsible for the entire Slovenian motorway and expressway network. Since 2022, it is available exclusively as an electronic vignette linked to your vehicle's licence plate.
Slovenia uses a three-class system: Class 1 (motorcycles), Class 2A (cars and vans with roof height below 1.3 m), and Class 2B (motorhomes and tall vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes). Selecting the correct class is essential — using the wrong class invalidates the vignette.
Unlike neighbouring Slovakia, Slovenia does not exempt electric vehicles. All passenger vehicles regardless of fuel type require a valid DARS vignette. The Karavanke tunnel between Austria and Slovenia requires an additional separate toll on top of the standard vignette.
Vehicles Exempt from the Slovenian Vignette
- Emergency and rescue vehicles (police, ambulance, fire)
- Military vehicles on official duty
- Vehicles over 3.5t — these use DarsGo electronic tolling instead
Key Slovenian Motorway Corridors
All AC (motorway) and HC (expressway) roads require a valid vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
How to Register — 5 Steps
Select Vehicle Class
Choose Class 1 (motorcycles), Class 2A (cars height < 1.3 m), or Class 2B (tall vehicles height ≥ 1.3 m). The class determines the price — selecting wrong invalidates the vignette.
Enter Plate & Country
Enter your licence plate number and country of registration (30+ countries supported). The vignette is linked digitally — no sticker will be issued or required.
Choose Validity Period
Select 7 days, 30 days, or annual validity. You can set a future start date up to 30 days ahead — perfect for pre-planning trips.
Optional: Add Insurance
Protect your journey with travel insurance including medical, luggage and vehicle assistance cover from €2.30 per person per day.
Review & Confirm
Double-check the vehicle class and licence plate carefully. Once confirmed, the vignette is registered in the DARS database immediately — you may drive right away.
Which Vehicle Class Do You Need?
Slovenia's multi-class system means different prices apply depending on your vehicle type and roof height. Always verify your vehicle class before purchasing.
Passenger Cars — Class 2A
Height below 1.3 m · Up to 3.5t
Standard passenger cars, sedans, hatchbacks, and compact SUVs with a roof height below 1.3 metres use Class 2A. This is the most common category for tourists visiting Slovenia.
Motorcycles — Class 1
All engine sizes
Motorcycles use Class 1 at reduced prices. Options: 7-day €12.50, 6-month €40.00, or annual €70.00. A separate vignette per motorcycle is required — a car vignette does not cover a motorcycle.
Large Vehicles — Class 2B
Height ≥ 1.3 m · Up to 3.5t
Motorhomes, camper vans, high-roof vans, and minibuses with roof height of 1.3 m or above use Class 2B. Options: 7-day €41.95, 30-day €74.95, annual €259.95.
Electric Vehicles (BEV)
Vignette required — no exemption
Unlike Slovakia, Slovenia does not exempt electric vehicles. All BEV and PHEV passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes must purchase the appropriate vignette class (2A or 2B) to use Slovenian motorways.
Heavy Goods Vehicles
Over 3.5 tonnes GVW
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes use DarsGo — Slovenia's electronic multi-lane tolling system requiring an on-board unit (OBU). These vehicles do not use the vignette system.
DarsGo OBU must be ordered and registered at darsgo.si before travelling.
Official DarsGo portal (darsgo.si)Fines & Penalties
Using Slovenian motorways without a valid vignette — or with the wrong vehicle class — results in a fine of €300 for passenger cars. DARS inspectors and cameras enforce compliance across the entire network.
Which Roads Require the Vignette?
The Slovenian vignette is required on all motorways (AC roads) and expressways (HC roads). Regional roads, national roads, and city streets are free — no vignette required for ordinary driving through Slovenian towns and villages.
The Karavanke tunnel on the A2 between Austria and Slovenia requires a separate tunnel toll in addition to the standard vignette. This tunnel toll is paid separately — the vignette alone is not sufficient for tunnel use.
Requires Vignette
- Motorways — A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 (AC roads)
- Expressways (HC roads)
- Karavanke tunnel access (+ separate tunnel toll)
- Motorway rest areas and service stations
No Vignette Needed
- Regional roads (R1, R2, R3)
- National roads and city streets
- Mountain passes not on AC/HC network
- Local and rural roads
Karavanke Tunnel — separate toll required
The Karavanke tunnel (A2) is one of the busiest Alpine crossings in Europe. It requires a separate toll payment in addition to your vignette. Purchase the tunnel toll beforehand or at toll booths.
Key Border Crossings
Slovenia borders Austria, Italy, Hungary, and Croatia. Most major crossing points connect directly to motorways — the vignette is required immediately upon joining the motorway network.
Austria Šentilj
A1 Main northern entry — most used crossing
Austria Karavanke
A2 Alpine tunnel — separate toll applies
Italy Fernetiči
A1 North-western coastal corridor to Koper
Croatia Obrežje
A2 Southern entry to Zagreb/Adriatic
Hungary Pince
A5 North-eastern entry via Murska Sobota
Register your Slovenian vignette before entering Slovenia. Remember: Karavanke tunnel requires a separate toll — the vignette alone is not sufficient.
