About the Slovak E-Vignette

The Slovak motorway e-vignette (elektronická diaľničná známka) is managed by NDS (Národná diaľničná spoločnosť) through the eznamka.sk portal. It is mandatory for all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes using motorways (D-roads) and expressways (R-roads) across Slovakia.

Unlike Switzerland's single annual option, Slovakia offers three validity periods: 10 days, 30 days, and 12 months — making it flexible for transit drivers, tourists, and regular commuters alike. The vignette is purely electronic; no physical sticker exists or is required.

Notably, fully electric vehicles (BEV) are completely exempt from the vignette requirement in Slovakia — one of the few European countries to offer this. Plug-in hybrids with a combustion engine are not exempt and must register normally.

Vehicles Exempt from the Slovak Vignette

  • Fully electric vehicles (BEV) — zero tailpipe emissions
  • Emergency vehicles (police, ambulance, fire brigade)
  • Military vehicles on official duty
  • Agricultural and forestry machinery
  • Diplomatic vehicles with CD plates

Key Slovak Motorway & Expressway Corridors

D1 Bratislava → Košice Main east-west backbone (460 km)

D4 Bratislava Ring Road Western bypass around capital
D8 Bratislava → Austrian border South-west to Vienna

R2 Zvolen → Košice Eastern Slovakia south corridor

All D-roads (motorways) and R-roads (expressways) require a valid e-vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, except BEV.

Electric Vehicles (BEV)

Zero-emission — no fee

Slovakia fully exempts battery electric vehicles (BEV) from the e-vignette requirement. If your vehicle is 100% electric with zero tailpipe emissions, you may use Slovak motorways freely. Plug-in hybrids (PHEV) are not exempt.

Heavy Goods Vehicles

Over 3.5 tonnes GVW

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes do not use the e-vignette system. Instead, they pay distance-based tolls through the MyToll electronic system managed by SkyToll — requires an on-board unit (OBU).

MyToll OBU must be registered at emyto.sk before travelling on Slovak roads.

Which Roads Require the Vignette?

The Slovak e-vignette is required on motorways (D-roads) and expressways (R-roads). Standard national roads, city streets, and regional routes are free of charge — no vignette needed for ordinary driving through Slovak towns.

Slovakia's motorway network is anchored by the D1 — the longest motorway at 460 km, connecting Bratislava through Trenčín, Žilina, Ružomberok, Poprad and Prešov all the way to Košice in the east, passing through the High Tatras foothills.

Requires Vignette

  • Motorways — D1, D2, D3, D4, D8
  • Expressways — R1, R2, R3, R4, R7
  • Motorway rest areas and service stations
  • Border approach sections on motorway network

No Vignette Needed

  • First-class national roads (I. trieda)
  • City streets and urban roads
  • Regional and local roads
  • Secondary and rural routes

The D1 between Bratislava and Košice (460 km) passes through the High Tatras region — one of Central Europe's most scenic motorway routes. Camera enforcement is active along the entire length.

Key Border Crossings

Slovakia borders Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Ukraine. Most major crossing points connect directly to D or R roads — the vignette is required as soon as you join a motorway after entry.
