Slovakia Vignette FAQ
Frequently asked questions about the Slovak e-vignette (diaľničná známka)
The Slovak e-vignette (diaľničná známka) is available in three validity periods: 10 days (€10.80), 30 days (€17.10), and 12 months (€50).
A vignette is required on all Slovak motorways (diaľnice, prefix D) and expressways (rýchlostné cesty, prefix R). This includes D1, D2, D3, D4 and R1, R2, R3, R4, R6, R7. Some sections are temporarily exempt — regular national and regional roads do not require a vignette.
No. Motorcycles (single-track vehicles) are not classified as motor vehicles subject to the vignette obligation under Slovak law. They are exempt from the e-vignette requirement on Slovak motorways and expressways.
No. Electric vehicles classified as passenger cars (category M1) are fully subject to the vignette requirement and must purchase an e-vignette just like any petrol or diesel car. There is no "green vehicle" exemption in the current Slovak system.
Driving on Slovak motorways or expressways without a valid e-vignette can result in a fine of €150 paid on the spot. Higher administrative penalties may apply if the case is contested. Enforcement is carried out by the Slovak Police and the National Highway Company (NDS) through plate verification.
Your vignette becomes valid from 00:00:00 on the start date you select during purchase. You can choose any future date as your start date, so it is easy to buy in advance. You will receive a digital confirmation document — no physical sticker is required.
The 365-day vignette runs for exactly 365 consecutive days from your chosen start date — it is not tied to the calendar year. For example, a vignette starting on 1 June 2025 is valid until 31 May 2026.
The National Highway Company (NDS) maintains a central electronic registry of all vignettes linked to vehicle registration plates. Police and NDS enforcement teams verify compliance by checking your plate number against this database — there are no toll booths and no sticker to show. Automated plate-recognition checks are used at motorway entry points.
